Overview of the Graduate Program in Mathematics at IME/UFG

The Graduate Program in Mathematics at the Institute of Mathematics and Statistics of the Federal University of Goiás (PPGMAT-IME/UFG) offers master's and doctoral degrees, providing solid training and high-level research in Mathematics. The program holds a Grade 5 rating in the evaluation by CAPES (the Brazilian federal agency for graduate education)—a high score reflecting academic excellence and confirming the consolidation and quality of its courses at the national level.

The Program organizes its teaching and research activities into:

Areas of Concentration: Algebra, Analysis, Geometry and Topology, and Applied Mathematics.

Research Lines:

  • Algebra
  • Partial Differential Equations
  • Algebraic Structures and Number Theory
  • Mathematical Formalisms for Computing and Deduction
  • Geometry
  • Optimization
  • Probability
  • Dynamical Systems

With more than fifty years of history, the program combines tradition, high-quality research, and a faculty dedicated to training new researchers. The Program's faculty consists of 24 permanent researchers and 7 collaborating professors, all holding PhD degrees. Among them, 15 faculty members are CNPq Productivity Research Fellows. Throughout its history, the program has awarded 304 Master's and 87 Doctoral degrees.

The Program has 304 Master's and 87 Doctoral degrees awarded

Our History

From a small group of advisors in 1973 to an excellent program with master's and doctoral degrees.

  1. 1973

The Beginning of the Master's Program

The Master's degree course in Mathematics at UFG was created with a small group of faculty advisors and operated as such until 1995. The first master's graduates went on to pursue doctorates at institutions such as USP, Unicamp, IMPA, and UFRJ, with many returning to strengthen PPGMAT-IME/UFG.

A New Faculty and Course Restructuring

In 1994, the faculty became composed entirely of professors holding PhD degrees. In 1995, Professors Walterson P. Ferreira (Master's Program Coordinator) and Ronaldo Alves Garcia (Head of the Mathematics Department) proposed restructuring the program to align it with CAPES guidelines. The program was redesigned, granted approval and funding, and IME invested in faculty development and hiring new PhDs. The result was a major leap in quality: more degrees awarded per year, reduced time-to-degree, and significant growth in high-quality scientific output.
